This month sees the 11th edition of CINECITY Brighton’s annual celebration of the very best in international cinema. From the 14th of November to the 1st of December premieres, previews and showcases from some of the world’s most renowned film makers are set to take place in a range of venues across the city. Alongside the global stars many of Brighton’s own will be displaying their art to eager audiences. They will be following in the footsteps of some of the greats in the history of film, who for more than a hundred years have put Brighton on the world cinema map, making contributions that have revolutionized the art of film-making.
There is a lot to see, showings of recent films by local film makers and collections of films by local students, surrealism and silent films sit beside the more traditional features and documentaries.
Among this glorious pick n’ mix of cinematic candy there are some real gems, a screening of the cult classic Fight Club, followed by a Q&A with the author Chuck Palahniuk which promises to be quite an evening. There is also a retrospective at the Brighton University Gallery on the life and works of surrealist superstar Jan Švankmajer who’s bizarrely dark humor and combination of live action, puppetry and animation have given rise some genre defining classics.
There really is something to suit every taste so get tickets while you can, it promises to be a real corker!
