Jon Lewis still has the hunger to succeed according to Sussex coach Mark Robinson after the 38 year old signed a one-year deal at hove.
The former England international was let go by surrey at the end of this season but Lewis said that he believes he will fit perfectly into Sussex fearsome seem attack that consists of Steve Magoffin, Chris Jordan and James Anyon who between them took 172 wickets last season.
Robinson said: “We needed another bowler in and Jon offers good cover across all the formats. He did well in one-day cricket for Surrey last season and we know that in four-day cricket we can throw him in as well.
“CJ (Jordan) is likely to be away with England for part of next season and the likes of Mags (Magoffin), Lewis (Hatchett) and Amjad (Khan) all had fitness concerns last year so it would have been a bit scary to go into next summer without someone like Jon.
The inclusion of Lewis (who has played one test for England) in the squad has cast further doubt on Amjad Khan who did not feature at all last season after undergoing knee surgery.
With no new deal in sight it’s doubtful if the former Kent paceman will be offered a new contract.
Robinson added: “Our budget is tight at the moment so we have got to be careful with every penny. In a perfect world we would like to have Amjad back but we need to know he can play back-to-back games and that we can afford him. He is going to South Africa for the next month or so and then we will assess things again at Christmas.
