Passengers had their journey towards Portslade delayed early this afternoon when the wheelchair access ramp of a busy 49 wedged on the pavement at Palmeira Square.
A wheelchair passenger had safely boarded when the ramp failed to retract despite best efforts of the driver and members of the public.
An elderly woman waiting at the bus stop endeavoured to free the ramp, prodding it with her stick, and a male passenger disembarked and attempted to move it.
For several minutes the driver pressed various buttons, doors opened and closed, things beeped and buzzed as some passengers became restless.
When the ramp still failed to budge, a number of people left the bus to continue their journeys on foot.
Once they had disembarked, the ramp finally lifted and the bus continued on its journey.
