A brave Brighton shopkeeper fought a robber with a chair leg after being threatened by him with a 6” knife Sunday morning.
The suspect entered Coombe Road Convenience Store on Sunday 21st October around 7.30am pointed a 6″ bladed knife at the shopkeeper and demanded money.
A struggle between both men ensued and the shopkeeper courageously fought the suspect off with the leg of broken chair.
After a few minutes the offender left the store with both the knife and chair leg and headed towards Lewes Road.
Detective Sergeant Steve Warner from Brighton and Hove CID said: “The shopkeeper was very brave in fighting off a man armed with a knife but the outcome could have been very different and fortunately he was not injured.
“Officers will be continuing today (22 October) with house to house enquires and viewing CCTV. If you have any information that could help us with our enquiries then please call 101 quoting serial 489 of 21/10 or you can leave a message anonymously with the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
The chair leg was found in alley way off Coombe Road a short time later and will be forensically examined.
The suspect is described as white between 5′ 8″ – 6” and was wearing a grey striped hooded top that was pulled up over his face.
There were no other customers or staff in the shop at the time of the incident.
