Tempers flare as police escort overlarge lorry through Portslade

By Catherine Roberts

Road rage reared its head as a huge vehicle carrying crane parts struggled to turn south towards Shoreham port from the Old Shoreham Road, Portslade, on Saturday afternoon.

A driver clashed with a man who tried to overtake him while he had stopped for the police escort. Names were exchanged.

It took 20 minutes for the Parker Steel vehicle to navigate a 0.4 mile stretch of Trafalgar Road. It just managed to scrape under the Fishersgate rail bridge.

Traffic was backed up along the Old Shoreham Road as far as Southwick.

Sussex Police confirmed that the escort was prearranged:  “Legislation requires that vehicles and load movements that exceed standard dimensions need to be pre-notified to police, highway and bridge authorities.”
