One year on: François Hollande

By Nathalie Jacquemard

It is the story of a popularity in free fall. For the first anniversary of François Hollande’s presidency, numerous are the criticisms. The Cahuzac scandal. A stagnating economy. Unemployment levels going through the roof……..many reasons to be angry. Are we already to conclude that François Hollande underestimated the difficulty of the presidential post? According to Marie-Eve Malouines, head of the political department of France Info, it is more a case of Hollande having taken a clumsy approach to it.

“A normal president, that was a good tactic in a campaign opposite Nicolas Sarkozy but once he arrived at the Élysée, it was clear that it didn’t work. People want a president who knows about his prerogatives, who exhibits his authority. François Hollande just appeared weak and without authority.”

Calm, almost to a fault……that is François Hollande’style. But it’s not ideal in a time of crisis, when people want to know where they are going and want to know that somebody is safely holding the reins and in control.

François Hollande is not a very good communicator. He probably knows where he’s going but he doesn’t necessarily know how to explain it. It seems that the Hollande camp has cottoned on to the communication problem as the “60 promises of the presidential campaign” have just been published on the Matignon web site. The aim seems to try to show people that most of those promises have already been fulfilled.

The problem is that any measures decided on take time to be implied, and in a time of crisis such as France is facing now, people want results right away. If François Hollande had that elusive charisma, he would be able to “talk” his way into making people accept that things do take time.

Are the French so deeply and rapidly disappointed in Hollande because they expected too much of him? It is very possible. He was seen as a kind of saviour during the presidential campaign. A man who would finally end the reign of the ”king” Sarkozy. Sarkozy was so hated by the end of his mandate that the presidential elections became a “let’s get rid of Sarkozy” vote rather than “let’s elect a president” vote. The euphoria that followed was always going to be short-lived, once reality hit again. It is a heavy burden for Hollande to carry. Once Sarkozy was gone, some of the French voters woke up with a hangover and wondered who that man they had chosen actually was.

The Cahuzac scandal has made things worse. Hollande’s selling point during the presidential campaign was the fact that he wanted to “do politics in a different way (to Sarkozy), without the bling, without the focus on money”……and the Cahuzac scandal is pure bling. So it is obviously a hard knock for the president. Several proposed bills are stuck, the 75% tax on high salaries is at a dead end. The opposition says that Hollande is useless, that his plan to reorientate Europe has been an unquestionable failure.

There ARE a few victories to counteract those failures: Mali, same-sex marriage…..but this one has divided opinion. For François Hollande, same-sex marriage is a  great reform but he thinks only time can show that……….and that he will be given full credit and praise for it in the future.

He needs time. That’s unlucky for a president whose slogan during the presidential campaign was : “Change, it’s now”

News: Mourinho keeps us guessing

In News on May 3, 2013 at 3:45 PM

By Tom Groom

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho insists he has not decided to leave the Spanish giants despite being heavily linked with a return to former club Chelsea.

Speculation linking the Portuguese coach with his former employers began when earlier in the week he said he wanted to go ‘some where people love me’.

Mourinho left the Blues in 2007 after a fall-out with owner Roman Abramovich, but remains the club’s most successful manager, having won two Premier League titles and three domestic cups.

Mourinho said: “When I decide on my future, my wife and kids will be the first to know, then the president and general director (at Real)”

“I’m working with total professionalism and I still have the same honour and pleasure to work for this club as I did a month or two ago”.

Despite being under contract at Madrid until 2016, the ‘Special One’ hinted that he might return by talking about the ‘love’ he felt from fans in England.

Many bosses in the Premier League are already excited at the prospect of having Mourinho back in the Premier League next year, including Chelsea’s former charge and Mourinho understudy, Andres Villas-Boas.

The now-Tottenham manager said a return of Jose Mourinho to the Premier League would be a ‘spectacular’ event, saying: “he has a wonderful history in this league”.

Mourinho, 50, has won the Champions League with Inter Milan and Porto, and Chelsea fans were heard chanting his name in their Europa League semi-final last night.

However, it would take a huge £12million to free Mourinho from his Real Madrid contract, but then Abramovich has never been afraid to loosen the purse-strings.

In fact, trigger-happy Roman paid £18million to get rid of Mourinho and his staff in 2007, but will be eager to appease fans after the controversial appointment of Rafael Benitez as interim manager after sacking Roberto Di Matteo.

The Blues powered through to their second European final in as many years, thanks to goals from Fernando Torres, Victor Moses and a stunner from an invigorated David Luiz.

However, they have yet to guarantee themselves a Champions League spot for next year, and with big-spending French outfit PSG also after Mourinho, they could miss out on their former boss.

The former favourite Mourinho would certainly be welcomed back by the fans, but it was his tempestuous clash of egos with Russian owner Abramovich that caused the parting of ways.

The fans will hope at least that this time around Mourinho and Abramovich will put aside their differences and try to bring more major honours to the South London club.

Gardeners See Red over Reduced Plots

In Brighton, Food, News on February 25, 2013 at 8:11 PM

allotment

By News reporter

Gardeners have written an open letter of protest in response to Brighton and Hove City Council’s decision to slash allotment plots for new tenants in half. Brighton and Hove Allotment Federation (BHAF) committee are calling on the council to stop the automatic chopping of the 250 square metre plots until a new allotment strategy has been devised.

BHAF’s committee said: “Lately allotments have become more of a leisure pursuit for certain sections of society.

“[But] they were originally created for those on lower incomes and the unemployed and retired.

“Current plot holders who have been restricted to a half plot … are being restricted in order to supply leisure plots to those who allotments were less intended for.”

A spokesperson for the council said: “[Smaller] plots are now our standard but that policy is not new. This is helping us meet the huge demand for plots.

“Smaller plots are also popular with people who cannot manage a big plot.”

BHAF is currently in talks with the council about the future of Brighton’s allotments.

The letter is accompanied by an ePetition, which closes on 15 March 2013, also demanding the postponing of action.

National Adoption Week

By Anthony Scott

This week is National Adoption Week, run by British Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), in the hope to raise awareness of adoption in the public domain.

The BAAF have been advising, supporting and campaigning for better outcomes for those children who are put into care since they were formed 32-years ago.

The company have run National Adoption Week since 1997, and believe it has really benefited those children who are in care and also appealing to people across the UK wanting to adopt.

Peter Evans, Cabinet minister for children and families said: “In an ideal world, every child would grow up in a stable environment loved by those around them.

“Sadly, that isn’t always the case, which is why we always welcome prospective families seriously considering adoption.”

BAAF also believe National Adoption Week is important in reminding people about the backgrounds of the children waiting for adoption, and the difference adoption can make to a child’s life.

The week-long event also attracts people wanting to find out about their own adoption or about a child they put up for adoption. The BAAF offer advice and support for those who of which are concerned.

As well as this, the company also offer an Adoption Champions scheme for those who want to get involved in the campaign so they can make a difference to the week dedicated to those children in care.

An area that the week is hoping to have an effect on is West Sussex, as potential adoptive parents are being sought for 19 children.

The service currently only has 11 approved adopters, but the ratio between adoptive parents and children in need of care is always changing.

An information evening will be held at Billingshurst Village Hall on November 13 about adoption, from 6pm until 8pm.

For a free information pack, visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/adoption, contact 01403 229553 or e-mail adoption.team@westsussex.gov.uk.

Brighton Boys feature in new pop video

In Brighton, Entertainment, Events, Features, Hove, Music, Sussex on April 19, 2012 at 7:05 PM

Cover for single Brighton Boy by Maria McAteer

Brighton boys of all ages co-star with singer-songwriter Maria McAteer in a pop video released yesterday.

The new video promotes her single, Brighton Boy, which was released for download as a sneak peek of the long-awaited debut album Her Night At Noon.

Maria directed the video, shot by co-songwriter Bjorn Dahlberg, on Hove seafront on Sunday 25 March, after putting out the call through social media.

“We were determined to get every single person we shot in”, she says, “because they’d all given time for us. And absolutely everyone’s really good.”

The video is a direct descendant of her viral hit Baby, in which diverse Brighton characters mime the familiar Justin Bieber lyrics over Maria’s vocal.

Music website Cover Me listed Baby’s salt-air visuals among it’s top 10 cover videos of 2010 for its cheeky comment on the ubiquity of the song.

The Brighton Boy video is more sophisticated in conception and execution, but retains Baby’s home-made charm and Maria’s obvious affection for this haven for individuals.

The sunniest of her own compositions, Brighton Boy has a simple, romantic hook, and Maria’s warm, wistful vocal quickly worms its way into the psyche.

Not every shot for the video was planned. “Like the guys on rollerblades; that was something in the moment. And it’s the best sequence”.

Hundreds of cyclists have been injured and five killed on Brighton’s roads over the last five years as new figures reveal accident black spots in the city.

Figures published by the Office of National Statistics show there have been 850 accidents between 2005 and 2010, with the palace Pier roundabout proving to be the most dangerous section of road.

This junction sees Marine Parade, Madeira Drive, Grand Junction Road and the A23 converge, and caused 129 accidents, 23 resulting in injuries to the cyclists.

Ian Essex, chairman of the Brighton Excelsior Cycling Club, told the Argus: “From my experience on some of the roads in Brighton the figures don’t surprise me but it is still shocking.”

The second most dangerous spot for bike-riders is the Lewes Road/Coombe Road junction, where 18 people were injured in 83 accidents. Read the rest of this entry »

Concerns over dramatic fall in garden bird numbers

In News on March 29, 2012 at 11:43 AM

The RSPB has revealed that the much-loved Starling and House Sparrow are fast disappearing from our gardens.

Results from the Big Garden Birdwatch 2012, which took place at the start of the year, have shown a near 80 per cent fall in the number of Starlings people are spotting.

The population of the birds is feared to have fallen to less than a third of what it was thirty years ago, while numbers of the House Sparrow have also shown a dramatic fall.

RSPB scientist Mark Eaton said: “The unmistakable flash of the glossy purple green starling is a familiar sight for many, but sadly it seems their numbers have dropped even further in this year’s survey.

“We’ve been monitoring this decline and encouraging people to step up and help birds like starlings but we will also be conducting some scientific research into the exact reasons for these declines. Read the rest of this entry »

Brighton suffering from the Budget blues?

Chancellor fo the Exchequer, George Osborne.

Mention the 2012 Budget to most people, and it’s unlikely to conjure excitement, but at the very least you might expect it to hold a certain morbid fascination. After all, when George Osborne and his colleagues squeeze the country’s spending and tinker with taxation, it’s we who are affected. But judging by the reactions of Brighton residents, it seems that a climate of despondency fostered by a prevailing economic insecurity means most people are not even interested in reading it.

Although many were unaware of the finer (some might say confusing) details of the document, there was a general perception that it is weighted unfairly, penalising the middle-classes and the vulnerable without even delivering the support to businesses that had been promised. Sussex County Cricket Season Preview 2012

This year, the county cricket season will make it’s earliest ever start, the first fixture being played on April 5th, with many of the top players across the league still out with international fixtures.

Sussex County Cricket has begun their pre season schedule, this week announcing the 15- man squad due to travelling to Dubai. The squad will again be led by Michael Yardy this year, as they look to better their 5th place finish of 2011.

Head coach Mark Robinson, Shrewd and popular former Sussex medium-pacer will again be leading the squad this year. The man still holds the world record for 12 first-class ducks in a row, has been at the reins for seven years and is regarded as one of the best up and coming coaches.

A breadth of new additions this year to the one day squad, former Essex all rounder Scott Styris has joined the 2012 Friends Life T20 campaign.

Star all rounder Luke Wright, who missed out on most of last season with a knee injury, will also miss the start of this season after signing for IPL outfit Pune Warriors.

Despite star bowler Monty Panesar missing the first few games due to responsibilities with the England squad in West Indies, he will return to grace the PROBIZ ground once again.

Prediction for 2012: Fifth in Division One: Sussex lost an entire seam attack in Martin-Jenkins, Kirtley, Collymore and Arafat back in 2010.  They more than coped last year by exceeding prediction and finishing a solid 5th.

A strong spin-bowling attack featuring the prolific Monty Panesar and the leg-spinner Will Beer should again cause havoc at the wicket.

Meanwhile England keeper and all rounder Matt Prior along with newcomer Scott Styris should bring a much needed new dynamic to Sussex batting.

Lose some sleep but save a life: When you change your clocks, test your smoke alarms.

The Fire Kills campaign is urging people to make a potentially life-saving move when they change their clocks on the weekend of Sunday, March 25 – by taking a moment to test their smoke alarms too.

Their hard hitting advertising campaign, released this week, reminds people that there’s more at stake than the noise when you forget to test your smoke alarm – with a tagline stating “We all lose an hour’s sleep this weekend – make sure you don’t lose a lot more”

A working smoke alarm can buy you valuable time to get out, stay out and call 999. But just half of all householders who own a smoke alarm say that they test that it’s working on a regular basis. Read the rest of this entry »

Save Saltdean Lido campaign continues

In News on March 8, 2012 at 4:18 PM

By Jodhi Doherty

The Saltdean lido is an iconic art-deco outdoor pool with terrace and sundeck and even though its cool outdoor waters may not be – the debate surrounding the 1930s attraction is hot.

For the past two years, protests to Brighton and Hove council have been heard from residents from Saltdean Community Association and the Save Saltdean Lido campaign highlighting how the 125-year-old lease should be removed from the hands of Dennis Audley, Buckingshire-based leaseholder.

Campaigners have accused the leaseholder Mr Audley of not maintaining the centre or parts of the lease by not opening on certain days.

Mr Audley told The Argus newspaper: “It has been very difficult the last few years.  All the publicity has destroyed our business. We’re still working towards an enabling development”.

Mr Audley is not planning on giving up just yet but Rebecca Crook, the chairman of Save Saltdean Lido also told The Argus: “We have always said that we are in this for the long-term and will not stop campaigning until the lease is handed to the community – its rightful owners”.
