Godfrey Daniel Talks at City College

Godfrey Daniel is a large man. He says so himself. When he walks into the room, scarlet fedora perched jauntily atop his head, he effortlessly commands attention.

Daniel is Labour’s candidate in Thursday’s election for Sussex Police Commissioner. He carried around a large banner saying so.

In a last minute bid for votes Daniel has agreed to come in and speak to students at City College. Barrack Obama visiting six swing states simultaneously it is not. But then this isn’t the Presidential Election. In fact it’s barely an election at all.

If the introduction of police commissioners has passed you by don’t worry, you’re not alone. Predictions suggest that only 15% of the electorate will cast their vote on Thursday.

This isn’t something that worries Daniel. He doesn’t care if he only gets one vote come the count, provided his rivals don’t get any. “A mandate is a mandate.” He announces in his Welsh brogue.

He would prefer it if more people voted though, and briefly raises the idea of making voting compulsory to ensure turnouts don’t fall to laughable levels. How many people who choose not to vote will regret it later on, especially if they end up with a commissioner they can’t abide, Daniels wonders, telling the room “People have died for our right to vote.”

When it comes to the question of who you should vote for Daniel is of course certain he’s the right man for the job. He has extensive experience in both local government, he’s been a Sussex County Councillor since 1997, and criminal justice, having served as a voluntary magistrate 23 years.

“Or you could vote for the Tory. And he’ll spend three years trying to find the bathrooms.”

Daniel may be deeply embroiled in party politics, he’s deputy leader of the Sussex branch of the Labour Party after all, but he is far from your average politician. Or at least he gives a very good impression of not being.

He makes no attempt to justify the reported £75m cost of the commissioner elections nationwide, in fact he freely admits that if it was up to him he’d maintain the status quo and give the money to the police themselves.

“Coppers for coppers.” He says happily. If you want bobbies on the beat then you have to pay for them.

But the election is going ahead and the money has already been spent. Even though the parties themselves, not to mention the media, seem completely apathetic. Daniel has received almost no support from Labour, they put up his £5000 deposit, but will get it back if he get more than 5% of the vote. Yet he hasn’t received the free post candidates expect in other elections and everything he, and candidates from other parties, have achieved has been down to “begging, scraping and volunteers.”

Daniel admits he would have preferred more backing from the powers that be but also understands the need for Labour to use their resources in the most effective ways, meaning General Election campaigns .

When it is suggested that the parties, his own in particular, are using the post of commissioner as a half way house between full on politics and retirement (several Labour candidates are former cabinet ministers, including former Deputy Leader John Prescott) Daniel becomes irritated for the first time, describing Prescott as “a bloody clever man.”

With any other politician, at least any I know of, this would have been the moment when the mask slipped and when the audience gasped. But with Daniel such outbursts seem par for the course. He may have the standard responses memorised and be unable to resist the occasional jibe toward the Lib Dems but in an era of identikit politicians and voter apathy Daniel did seem a breath of fresh air.

Brighton suffering from the Budget blues?

Mention the 2012 Budget to most people, and it’s unlikely to conjure excitement, but at the very least you might expect it to hold a certain morbid fascination. After all, when George Osborne and his colleagues squeeze the country’s spending and tinker with taxation, it’s we who are affected. But judging by the reactions of Brighton residents, it seems that a climate of despondency fostered by a prevailing economic insecurity means most people are not even interested in reading it.

Although many were unaware of the finer (some might say confusing) details of the document, there was a general perception that it is weighted unfairly, penalising the middle-classes and the vulnerable without even delivering the support to businesses that had been promised. Review: An adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s Haroun and the Sea of Stories @ Pelham Tower Theatre 11/5/11

Andrew Hoggarth directs City College Brighton and Hove’s (CCBH) third year performing arts students  in a new stage adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s children’s novella Haroun and the Sea of Stories.

In a tale that borrows its defining elements from magical realism, the literal and the prosaic are abandoned in favour of fanciful allusions, dreamscapes, and a quizzical cast of characters.

This adaptation is successful in recreating such a world. Performing arts leader Andrew Hoggarth said:”As well as being a really magical tale which has inspired the students to excel themselves from an acting point of view, I think it’s also a great showcase for what the College can offer to budding actors.”

News: Caroline Lucas MP speaks to Brighton students

In City College, News, Politics on May 14, 2011 at 3:50 PM

By Poppy Bragg

Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas has given NCTJ journalism students at City College Brighton and Hove an insight into her first year in Parliament.

Speaking to the group on Friday (May 13), Green Party Leader, Dr. Lucas, said her first few months in Westminster were “really difficult”.

As the first ever Green MP and the sole representative of her party, there was no one to explain to her the workings of Parliament.

While most MPs were helpful, she said there were exceptions – most notably the MP who, when she went to shake his hand after meeting him for a second time, almost recoiled in horror declaring: “In this House we only shake hands once.”

News: City College Brighton and Hove construction students back on the road to Gambia

In City College, Events, Features, Music, News on April 6, 2011 at 10:30 AM

By Rich Hook

Brighton Lite's Jamie Jolley played a cracking set at the Caroline of Brunswick last Friday to raise funds for the Give to Gambia appeal

Teachers and students from City College Brighton & Hove are appealing for donations so they can bring their skills to one of the most disadvantaged nations in the world.

The college’s construction department needs to raise £10,000 to fund a return trip to Gambia to finish work at a school which was started last year.

Last December, as part of the Give it to Gambia appeal, three students, studying for a construction apprenticeship as part of the 14-16 Engagement Programme, joined a 15-strong Sussex Central YMCA group in visiting Kafuta Lower Basic School in Brikama.

At the school, the group used their construction skills to build a new set of football goals and cricket bats, as the school had no sports equipment.

Gambia group leader, Steve Wilkins, said: “It wasn’t until we went out there that you understand how basic the facilities are – it’s definitely third world. We left behind the tools we used to try and create a legacy, and that’s why we’re so keen to go back out there to carry on the project.”

While the students were unable to make all the repairs necessary to fix the library, they have since set this as the main goal for this year’s trip.

This December, the seven students and three staff going are aiming to redesign the whole building with a new bookcase, re-painted walls and new book supplies.

Wilkins said: “The trip is as beneficial for our students as the ones they are helping out in Gambia. These students are specifically chosen because mainstream education isn’t working out for them, for one reason or another, and they all come back changed as individuals and with a different outlook.”

The fundraisers have already organised a range of events, such as a Mother’s Day fair, five-a-side football tournaments, stalls selling artwork and products made at the college, and music events like Friday’s open-mic show which featured performances by City College journalism students Chris Thom and Jamie Jolley.

Sports: Students receive top boxing training in Olympic-sized ring at City College Brighton & Hove

In City College, News, Sport on March 30, 2011 at 11:35 PM

By Jack Bradshaw

Britain can boast a sterling amateur boxing record, with the likes of Amir Khan, James DeGale and even the enigmatic Audley Harrison all winning Olympic gold medals in recent years.

So with 2012 fast approaching, a new generation of aspiring youngsters will be aiming to emulate their sporting heroes at the London Games.

CCBH's boxing team show off the excellent facilities

Yet despite British success in both the amateur and professional divisions, boxing is still a sport which seems largely unavailable to the general public.

It remains a tabooed sport, with relatively few boxing clubs readily available in comparison to those for the likes of football, cricket and rugby.

Fortunately for local Brighton youngsters, City College Brighton & Hove (CCBH) has bucked the trend and created a set of world-class boxing facilities, including an Olympic-sized ring.
