It might be lazy to compare South London’s S.C.U.M to The Horrors, but often cliché originates in certain home truths. With their brand of synthy neo-psychedelia, the quintet’s sound draws clear parallels with the current darlings of the British indie music scene. Unfortunately, it sounded better the first time around. Hearing them headline at Tuesday night’s gig at The Green Door Store, and trying in vain to distinguish one impossibly overblown anthem from the next, it quickly became apparent that S.C.U.M are as of yet lacking the killer tunes any such act requires to make it big.

Perhaps more worryingly, they seem to share the lacklustre stage presence often levelled as a criticism at their aforementioned peers. Although the musicians seemed well-rehearsed, their performance felt mechanical. If one thinks of the acts from the past who’ve had success at mixing emotion with post-punk sounds, most notably Joy Division, they’ve always sought to invest their live shows with a dimension of self-revelation bordering on performance art. S.C.U.M, on the other hand, felt detached throughout from the music they were making, as if covering another artist’s songs.

Thomas Cohen, lead singer and fiancé of socialite Peaches Geldof, also comes across as overly mannered live. Gesturing regally and gazing off into the distance like a poor man’s hybrid of Jim Morrison and Nick Cave, he presumably meant to hammer home the music’s ethereal quality. Sadly, hammering the ethereal is somewhat of a contradiction in terms.

By comparison, the warm-up act Bo Ningen were something close to remarkable. Hailing from Japan and based in London, they melded the unholy racket of punk rock with 70s avant-garde acts like Can. Culminating their set with an extended jam, guitars and drums crashing against one another in a maelstrom somewhere between funk and white noise, they laid down a formidable gauntlet for S.C.U.M and ultimately stole the gig out from under their noses. Score that as a victory for the underdogs.

Thousands took part in last Sunday’s Brighton Half Marathon including celebrities such as Norman Cook and Katie Price but all had to run further than originally planned.

Over 7400 participants who entered the race were prepared to run the 13.1 miles but a misplaced signal between mile 4 and 5, attributed to human error, meant that those that finished had actually ran 13.42 miles.

Race director Becky Stevens apologised on the official Brighton Half Marathon website adding “We will be implementing some new additional measures ready for the 2013 race to prevent this from happening again.”

Despite the error, the 22nd Brighton Half Marathon was deemed to be a great success by those taking part. Geraldine Waring, 61, from London said: “It’s been absolutely fantastic, the spectators were so encouraging and they really kept me going throughout.” When asked if she thought it was well organised she added: “Extremely well organised and well done to whoever organised the weather!”

Race Organisers The Sussex Beacon confirmed that Matthew Dumigan of the Swansea Harriers Athletics Club took the official fastest race time at 01:08:41.

Licence forfeited for breach of conditions

Hove shop owner has his license revoked after being found guilty for selling fake wine.

Salvatore Capuano, found guilty of selling fake Jacob’s Creek wine in December last year, was back in court last week on two counts of breaching licence conditions and had his licence taken away.

Magistrates ordered Mr Capuano, 34, of Palmeira Avenue, Hove, to pay £750 in fines and £650 costs, plus £15 victim surcharge.

He also forfeited his personal licence which prevents him from being a designated premises supervisor (DPS) from now on.

In December, Brighton Magistrates found Mr Capuano and his company Always 4 U Ltd., guilty on four counts of breaking trademarking and food safety laws by selling 60 bottles of fake Jacobs Creek wine following an operation by trading standards and customs officers. Although found guilty, he kept his licence on that occasion.

Councillor Lizzie Deane, chair of the city’s Licensing Committee said: “We are pleased that magistrates forfeited the licence as it sends a strong message that anyone selling fake alcohol risks losing their licence. As well as the health risk to the public, it really isn’t worth the damage it can do to a business.

“The council works with owners of licensed premises and our trading standards officers advise them not to buy wines or spirits from an unofficial supplier. We also work in partnership with wine companies, Sussex Police and HM Revenue & Customs to crack down on counterfeit and illegal alcohol sales.”

Sussex Police licensing officer Lara Baldwin said: “I am very happy with this decision. It sends a clear message to anyone not taking their responsibilities in the licensing trade seriously or who may consciously be flouting the law that any transgressions will be robustly dealt with. Potentially, they can wave goodbye to a business or a career.”

Conservative and Labour parties will try to stop the Greens’ proposed tax hike at today’s budget meeting.

All 54 councillors on Brighton and Hove City Council will convene to agree the revenue budget and council tax for the upcoming two years.

The Greens have asked for support from the opposition, but they are unlikely to receive it. Even if the Conservative amendments are outvoted in favour of the Greens, they are willing to back Labour’s amendments in order to secure a council tax freeze.

Coun Jason Kitkat – the council’s cabinet member for finance – insisted that the Green budget proposals must not be taken out of context.

The Greens argue that accepting a tax freeze would not be in-keeping with the government’s national austerity policy; similarly, accepting the offered £3 million central subsidy would be harmful in the long run.

Party leader, MP Caroline Lucas, said: “If councils accept Mr Pickles’ [Local Government minister] tax freeze this year, they will have to make much bigger cuts next year – and the year after.”

The Tory and Labour parties are opposed to the Greens’ suggested budget cuts, which range from closing some pubic toilets to the controversial rise in allotment fees. The Argus has raised protest within the local community, resulting in a recent poll which concluded that 68% of 7000 people who voted online supported the tax freeze.

Conservative leader Coun Geoffrey Theobald added that an under spend of £3.2 million was projected, so the tax hike was unnecessary.

However savings of over £80 million are forecast to be needed over the next four years and an increase in council tax of 3.5% could provide a more viable budget option for the future as well as minimising the pressure placed on vital public services.

The budget meeting will be held at 4.30pm this afternoon at Brighton Town Hall.

Brighton’s FA cup run is over, with their defeat last Sunday at Anfield by Liverpool which I was delighted to attend. The fixture ended in a forgettable 6-1 scoreline.

The away support was fantastic as always. And despite conceding after only 4 minutes, the game promised much when Brighton drew level on 16 minutes with a 25 yard free kick shot by Kazenga LuaLua. Liverpool were busier in the goal area though and Brighton succumbed to a Glen Johnson header shortly before half time. Further chances looked likely at half time, and Brighton were certainly in with a shout.

The home fans were largely quiet right up until 60 minutes when the Fields Of Anfield Road echoed around the ground, no doubt enthused by key striker Andy Carroll who finally added to his low goal tally for the season with a drive on 56 minutes. Further goals were added when Steven Gerrard put away a ball the keeper failed to deal with, and with an embarrassing display of ball controlling skills by Lewis Dunk who put into his own net. Despite a penalty which Luis Suarez failed to convert, the controversial front man completed the rout with a goal on 84 minutes.

Two of the goals had unfortunately involved the ever-dependable Liam Bridcutt - this meant it could be argued there had been 3 own goals, something never before happening in the history of the F.A. cup. Another uncomfortable statistic and manager Gus Poyet conceded that the defending had been unacceptable for a team vying for Premiership football.

Possession was 51%/49%. Shots on and off target totalled 30-9 to Liverpool. Match attendance was 43,940.

Almost 190 jobs at American Express’s European headquarters in Brighton could be moved overseas according to plans being considered by the firm.

The company may move “non-customer facing” roles out of the city to India and Argentina.

American Express is currently Brighton and Hove’s largest private sector employer with 2,900 staff working in the city and 3,500 across Sussex.

A company statement issued by American Express today advised that Brighton: “”continues to be an important part of our global network and we remain committed to the city”.

The company has already moved 150 jobs from Madrid to Brighton and is currently the new European operations centre in the city.

The statement said: “As a global company, we are always seeking ways to make our business more flexible and efficient to help better serve our customers.

“This approach sometimes involves moving some functions from one operations centre to another.

“No final decisions have been made in relation to the proposal which could potentially impact approximately 190 permanent roles.”

The company have assured affected employees that it will provide support to them over the coming weeks.

Police believe that the robbery of man in Western Road, Brighton, at the weekend may be linked to another robbery in Ship Street earlier the same night.

The man, who was uninjured, was robbed by the cashpoint outside the Nat West Bank at about 12.15am on Saturday morning (February 18). The suspects, a man and two women, were chased towards Churchill Square and tried to get in a taxi on Western Road. The man is described as white, 5′ 3″, aged around 22 and wearing black adidas tracksuit bottoms and a black and grey winter bomber-style jacket. One of the women was 5′ 3″, about 17, with long blonde hair and dressed all in black. The other was around 6′ with dark brown hair and wearing white jeans or leggings with a black pattern, a burgundy hooded top with a khaki green jacket over it.

Police have linked the incident with a robbery a short while earlier between 11pm and 12 midnight in Ship Street when a woman approached another man and demanded his mobile phone before striking him with a lump of wood, causing cuts and bruises. He was also robbed of cash. The suspect was in the company of two other people and described as white, aged around 30 and with blonde hair.

Anyone with information about either of the incidents, including any taxi drivers who may recognise the descriptions or circumstances, is asked to call Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 33 of 18/02.

Fire crews prevented a major blaze as they extinguished a chimney fire yesterday.

Two fire appliances from Heathfield and Crowborough attended the blaze a property in Feltching street, Mayfield, at 3.46pm.

When crews arrived they found an established fire in the inglenook fireplace.

The fire had been caused by a wooden log rolling out of the fire grate and causing fire to spread to a pile of wood that was stored within the hearth area.

When crews arrived at the property, the close proximity of the furniture in relation to the fire meant the sofas were beginning to smoulder.

The furniture was quickly moved to the other side of the room and the fire was extinguished using two buckets of water.

Firefighters removed all the debris from the fireplace to prevent the fire from reigniting.

The tenant of the property had received a home safety visit by East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service before Christmas 2011. Firefighters from Mayfield had fitted smoke alarms in the property and offered relevant fire safety advice.

Police are warning residents to be wary of cold callers after thieves posing as ‘water board’ official stole more than £1,000 from an elderly Eastbourne woman.

At 3.20pm on Saturday, February 18, two men called unannounced at a flat in Bourne Street, Eastbourne, posing as water board employees.

They gained access on the pretext that there was a local water problem. While one of them engaged the 89-year old resident in conversation in the kitchen, the other man went elsewhere in the flat and stole £1,500.

The men are both described as white, and in their thirties, about 5’5″-6″ and of stocky build with, bald or shaven heads, short beards and moustaches. Both wore black and white check shirts.

One may have worn a checked jacket and dark trousers. The other man wore a white hooded top
They both spoke with what is described as a foreign accent.

Detective Constable Andy Mountford-Laker said: “If any other local residents have had men calling at the door and asking to come in on the pretext of being from the ‘water board’ we would like to knonw about it.

“Please contact us 101 quoting serial 1177 of 18/2.

“Meanwhile, please contimue to be aware and cautious about anyone calling at your door unannonced and do not let them in.

“This check list of tips may help you;

•Attach your door chain before opening the door to strangers
•Water company staff and contractors always carry identification
•A company uniform and vehicle logo are things to watch for
•Remember, if you are unsure, don’t let them in – keep them out
•Employees and contractors of genuine companies will always be happy to wait whilst you check their identification. Your can check the identity of water contractors by telephoning Southern Water on 0845 278 0845.
•If you are suspicious and the callers are still present or nearby call the police via 999.”

Detectives are considering possible links between this offence and four similar offences which happened in Brighton, Hove and Crawley during the past week.
